Badja Reserve, Numeralla
Consultation has concluded
Supported by the NSW Government Stronger Communities Fund – Major Projects Program (SCFMPP) Snowy Monaro Regional Council is looking forward to be working with the local community to deliver improvements to the Badja Reserve Area.
The Badja Reserve was identified by the community of Numeralla through face to face consultation held in May. Our conversations with this community initially focused on streetscape enhancement within Numeralla. While the community provided a few suggestions for improvements to Numeralla’s streetscape, it was clear that overall, the community was happy with the look and feel of this space. Preferring instead to shift the focus to improve and further develop the Badja Reserve area. The usage of the area continues to grow in popularity, especially during the warming months along with the visitors attending the annual Numeralla Folk Festival.
Further discussions allowed Council to capture the community’s aspirations for this space, visitor issues (amenities and access) as well as addressing environmental sustainability concerns.
Our aim has been to find a balance that achieves the long-term sustainability of the site, maintaining the natural environment while creating a space that meets the needs of current and future visitors.
The draft whole of concept designs that can be downloaded from the document library on the right of the screen. The initial focus will be on the lower section day area of the reserve however as it is envisaged that the upper area will be a staged development as funding is allocated.
On the left is a rest area(Lower Badja reserve), perfect for day trippers and short stay camping. Picnic tables, BBQs, Fire Pits and allocated parking allow visitors to explore the area while taking a break on their travels. A walking trail leads to the amenities block and expanded camping areas across the road.
While a more defined entry way on the right leads to the dedicated longer term camping areas (Upper Badja reserve) . Camp sites are to be clearly marked, including additional plantings to enhance the look and feel of the natural environment. Taking on board feedback from the community, a site has also been proposed for a new amenities block (toilets).
Riverbank and rehabilitation plantings have also been included to enhance and address eroded areas. Council plans to work close with the local environmental and Landcare groups to implement strategies to overcome this issue.
