CONSULTATION UPDATE 9 December 2019:

Council would like to thanks all residents that took the opportunity to provide feedback on the proposal to remove trees from Memorial Park as part of Myack Street drainage improvement works between 11 November and 8 December 2019. Council would like to assure everyone that each comment received will be included in a report to Council for discussion at its meeting on 20 February 2020 and a copy of all comments received is attached for information in the Document Library on this page.

Council would also like to invite everyone to a further meeting, to be held on Monday 16 December at Berridale Community Hall. The meeting is scheduled to start at 6pm and finish at 7.30pm.

The purpose of this meeting is to discuss your thoughts on how we might better preserve the significance of Memorial Park and the trees, improve drainage between Myack Street and Park Street and to explore what future work opportunities might exist that would improve Memorial Park for community and visitor use.

Public Exhibition Period:

Monday 11 November 2019 to midnight Sunday 8 December 2019 inclusive - COMPLETED

Following the Berridale community meeting hosted by Council on Wednesday 30 October 2019 where concerns where expressed over Council’s proposal to remove seven (7) trees from Memorial Park (as part of plans to upgrade Myack Street and improve drainage through Memorial Park), Council gave the undertaking that the community would have an opportunity to provide further feedback on the proposals.

In addition to the proposed upgrade project, the power pole located next to the Memorial Park (on the Myack Street side) would need to be removed.

Project Overview

In 2014 the then Snowy River Shire Council, worked with the community of Berridale to co-design through a series of consultations and meetings with stakeholder groups the Berridale Village Landscape Master Plan Report. (Available for download from the Document Library)

This Masterplan was adopted by the Council and the first phase implemented. The project commenced with the removal of Lombardy poplar from Jindabyne Road (due to poor health) and beautification of this space.

Followed by the regeneration portion of the project with students from the Berridale Public School and relatives of the local school children through the Junior Forest League project under Headmaster MrG.J. Colditz of Berridale Public School who planted the trees in 1935. Lombardy poplar's were planted at each of the entrances to the township of Berridale. Creating the avenue feel that was identified by the community as being of high value and part of their connection and identity with their home.

Council has continued to seek grant funding to continue the implementation of each of the phases outlined within the Master Plan. One of the sessions identified by the community as requiring attention is the formalisation of the Myack Street and Jindabyne Road intersection. With improvements sort to enhance both traffic safety and drainage issues.

This proposed work will, however, impact the Memorial Park space, with drainage improvements resulting in the removal of seven trees. The widening of the creek bank will interfere with the root system. Taking into account the age of the trees, current health and point of their lifecycle, outlined within a report from an independent arborist it is recommended that the trees be removed for community safety.

This phase of the project would also see the removal of the Power-Pole (Stay) on the corner of Myack and Park Street, Berridale (photograph above and plans attached). This work is necessary for the preparation of the proposed drainage works on Myack Street and the installation of stormwater pipes.

If these proposed works are to go ahead, Council has been assured that no trees around the pole will be affected. One of the side effects of the removal of this pole is that it carries a power cable to the Cenotaph. Once the pole is removed, the power supply and cable will also be removed from the site.

There is a separate power supply to the lights beneath the trees lining Jindabyne Road through Memorial Park and Council plans to extend that connection through to the Cenotaph. This work would require some trenching.

Council is seeking feedback on the proposed upgrade, including the removal of the seven trees and the power pole.

Feedback will be accepted until midnight Sunday 8 December 2019.

Consultation update 22 November 2019

Snowy Monaro Regional Council would like to take this opportunity to thank all members of the community that have provided feedback to Council’s proposed works on Myack Street and Memorial Park, Berridale. It is becoming clear that a diverse range of opinions exists and Council assures everyone that their contribution is being recorded and will be presented to our Councillors at the January 2020 meeting.

Council reminds everyone that all the information relating to proposed works including flood studies, tree reports and drainage options considered through Memorial Park are available on this page, at the Berridale Council Office and across a number of local businesses in Berridale. These include; Berridale Post Office, Whisk & Cocoa, Berridale Service Station, Berridale Inn, Shear Delight Hair Salon and the Country Club. Alongside that information is a Community Feedback Form and everyone is encouraged to make their views known on the proposed works.

Council would finally like to give notice of its intention to call a public meeting in December 2019 (date and place yet to be finalised) where the public will be provided further opportunity to comment on the proposed works. Council is not proposing to follow an agenda at this meeting and there will be no time allocated to specific speakers. The intention is to provide everyone with the opportunity to speak in an environment where people’s views and opinions are not subject to criticism or an opposing view.

A summary of the December meeting will be available and attached alongside the meeting minutes from the October Meeting when the Council consider the report on proposed works and decide on whether those works proceed.
