Background

In response to requests from residents and school representatives to improve parking and traffic safety on Murray Street, Council and the Snowy Monaro Local Traffic Forum have developed a proposal that includes rear-to-kerb angled parking, line-marked parking bays, accessible parking, and a potential infants’ campus stop-and-drop area.

The proposed changes are based on recommendations from NSW Police and Transport for NSW representatives on the Snowy Monaro Local Traffic Forum.

Council engineers have developed draft plans based on these recommendations for 39 rear-to-kerb spaces, including one accessible parking space, which are generally considered to be the safer angled parking option for both pedestrians and motorists.

Rear-to-kerb parking makes exiting a parking space easier and provides better visibility to the driver, controlled reversing into a space requires lower speeds and a greater level of driver attention, and having the boot or tray facing the kerb reduces the need for pedestrians to enter the roadway.
