Thank you to those who provided input to help inform our proposed Establishment of Alcohol Free Zones and Alcohol Prohibited Areas that closed at 11.59pm Sunday 4 December 2022.

BACKGROUND

Snowy Monaro Regional Council wishes to advise that the re-establishment of Alcohol Free Zones and Alcohol Prohibited Areas is proposed for Cooma and Jindabyne.

It is proposed that:

  • Alcohol Free Zones (roads, street footpaths, carparks) will be enforced from 7.00pm to 9.00am inclusive; and
  • Alcohol Prohibited Areas (parks, walking paths, the Lake Jindabyne Foreshore) will be enforced from 9.30pm to 9.00am inclusive.
  • The zoning will apply in the same geographic areas of Cooma and Jindabyne as mapped for the previous (2019) implementation
  • the zoning will apply for a period of 4 years, commencing on the date of Council endorsement (expected December 2022)

Enforcement will be undertaken by NSW Police.

Alcohol Free Zones and Alcohol Prohibited Areas forbid the consumption of alcohol in an identified area during specific times. These areas include public roads, footpaths, and public lands such as parks. During the periods specified, police have the right to confiscate and tip out alcohol in these areas. All alcohol-free/prohibited areas will be fully sign-posted.

Alcohol Free Zones and Alcohol Prohibited Areas do not apply to private property, or to street dining areas attached to licensed premises. Event exemptions may be made available at no cost on application to Council.
