Snowy Monaro Regional Council (SMRC) is excited to open a current round of feedback for the proposed learner bike track at Cooma’s Nijong Oval sporting precinct.
The proposed learner bike track is set to become one of the region’s favourite, family attractions. The project is set to be delivered through the Stronger Communities Fund Major Projects Program (SCFMPP).
The Snowy Monaro has a strong cycling culture, and the bike track will enable children to learn the fundamentals of safer riding in an environment that, as far as possible, mirrors real riding conditions.
Additional supporting project information can be viewed in the document library on the right of the screen.
Council has been collecting community feedback on this project throughout February and March. The consultation closed Wednesday 20 March 2019 at 5:00pm. Our team is currently reviewing the data, that will be presented to Council in April.
Project background
In 2012, the former Cooma-Monaro Shire Council undertook a detailed bicycle strategy. After extensive community consultation, the survey data found the community’s number one project was the construction of a learner bike track at Nijong Oval.
Additional information
The new bike track will be designed, similar to Learn to Ride centres in the ACT. The centres have the look and feel of a real, road environment and are a safer space for young cyclists to learn riding skills. The centres include footpaths, pedestrian crossings, line markings and road signs.
The centres are intended for children from four to 10 years-of-age and provide a non-threatening and fun environment where kids can learn all the basics from how to safely cross the road through to independent and confident riding on their own bike. They are also suitable for children with broad-ranging skills and needs, including children with additional needs.
